Written Summary:
This Series
does not cover the sport side of the Martial Arts. In the introduction Jim “Smokey”
West states that the material presented will show you how to survive in the street.
Mr. West knows what he is talking about and can back it up with real life experience.
“Smokey” will gouge your eyes, knock you out, snap your arm and choke you all in
a matter of seconds. It is obvious that he is very good at what he does.
This
series covers a lot of material such as punches, kicks, soft tissue ripping and tearing,
knees, elbows, head butts, joint locking techniques, control techniques, chokes,
defense from punches, grabs and much more. Also shown is how to use objects in your
environment such as a bottle, shot
glass, hair brush or a pen. Another thing I
liked about this series was that 3 students were used to demonstrate the techniques
taught while Mr. West watched and corrected any mistakes made. This really seemed
to work well and I believe will help viewers avoid the same mistakes.
There
are very few negative things that can be said about this series. The few negative
points I picked up on are as follows. Mr. West does cover ground techniques in this
series and most of them are very good. However after watching this tape I believe
that Mr. West is much better at standup fighting than he is at ground fighting. It
is not that he does not know how to fight on the ground it is just that this is not
his speciality. For example a few errors that I picked up on were as follows. When
the triangle choke was shown Mr. West does not cross the person’s arm across his
chest and thereby blocking off both arteries. Also the importance of having your
foot tightly secured behind the back of your knee is not shown. Another point that
I noticed is that while performing the arm bar Mr. West keeps the back of the opponents
hand against his chest (and pulls straight down) rather that stressing to keep the
thumb pointed up. The above is why I rated Instructor demonstrated skill level at
9 rather than 10.
This tape series would be especially beneficial to beginning
students or a non martial artist who wanted to greatly increase their chances of
survival on the street. This tape series has a LOT to offer. I would highly recommend
it.
