Written Summary:
The material
on this tape is fundamentally sound and taught by an instructor, Kelly Worden, who
has a solid understanding of how to use a knife and more also how to teach via the
video medium. The material on this video is drawn primarily from the filipino martial
arts and is geared primarily toward those viewers with minimal exposure or training
in the filipino arts. Those martial artists who have filipino ma backgrounds will
already be familiar most of the material on this video. This is a practical tape,
just as the title suggest. There isn’t a lot of fancy or “pretty “ techniques shown
but instead the viewer is shown a good deal of basic training in knife fighting.
After
a brief introductory segment on knife training courtesy, the viewer is shown material
on angles of attack. As Mr. Worden says “ Think angles. Not techniques “. We are
shown figure eight knife slashes ( horizontal, vertical, and diagonal ), various
slash and thrust patterns and introduced to the fundamental concept of “ defanging
the snake “. Stance emptying, grips, footwork, counters, and follow ups are also
covered on this video as well. The tape ends with Mr. Worden defending himself in
various scenarios.
If you want a good basic video on the fundamentals of knife
fighting, then this is a good video to purchase. If you want more advanced knowledge,
check out Mr Worden’s Combat Blade, Progressive Lines from Natural Spirit OR the
second volume in this video series by Paladin (Practical Knife Fighting For Personal
Protection, Volume 2).
